You can submit a request to the Department of Home Affairs. If you hold a temporary visa like a Visitor (subclass 600), or any other temporary visa with less than 6 months validity, they won't process requests for voluntary cancellation.
Yes. If you return to Australia, you can open a super account. You’ll just need to check with your preferred super fund in case they have any conditions on opening an account.
Unfortunately, Australian superfunds are unable to transfer amounts overseas (apart from New Zealand). This is made possible by the Trans-Tasman Retirement Savings Portability scheme. If you are moving to any other country, you won't be able to transfer your super.
No, you don’t need to include DASP on your tax return as it doesn’t form part of your assessable income for Australian tax purposes.
If you don't claim you superannuation, after 6 months it will be transferred to the ATO. Once your funds are transferred to the ATO, you will no longer receive investment returns. Therefore we advise our clients to claim their superannuation when they leave the country unless they are close to retirement.
The following people can certify documents outside of Australia:
The Australian Business Number (ABN) is a unique 11-digit identifier issued by the Australian Business Register which is operated by the Australian Taxation Office. When you are completing your DASP you are asked for you super fund's ABN. You will find you ABN on a statement from your superfund or on their website.
If you are applying using online application system, you can claim your super for both funds in the same applications. If you use the paper form to apply, you will need to complete two forms and send each directly to your super funds.
If you believe your super fund has withheld an incorrect amount of tax from your DASP, you should contact your super fund and request a refund. You need to do this in the same financial year that your DASP was paid.
If your request for a refund is made after the end of the financial year in which your DASP was paid, or if your DASP was paid by the ATO, and you believe an incorrect amount of tax has been withheld from your DASP, you can lodge a refund request with the ATO in writing.
If you believe you have been incorrectly taxed, you can check with us before you submit an appeal.
